More restrictions on commercial vehicles entry in Delhi imposed by SC

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (5 January) added four more entry points on three national highways and one state highway to restrict commercial vehicles’ entry into the city while also banning heavy commercial vehicles not bound for the national capital.

Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act 2015 comes into force settling jurisdiction issue

The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2015, received the assent of the President of India on 26 December 2015, and has been notified in the Gazette of India on 29 December 2015. It shall be deemed to have come into force from the retrospective date of 15 June 2015, when the first Ordinance (of 2015) to amend the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, was promulgated. It is pertinent to point out that the said first Ordinance was then substituted by the second Ordinance to amend the N.I. Act. Now, with the notification of the aforesaid Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Act, 2015, which has been duly passed by the Parliament and has received the assent of the President, the Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Second Ordinance, 2015, has been repealed. With this, the issue of territorial jurisdiction of filing of cheque bouncing cases has been finally settled.

CBI registers disproportionate assets case against senior Delhi IAS officer

The state government in Odisha is shortly going to constitute a Law Commission that will examine all the existing laws and suggest modifications, if necessary, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said on Tuesday.

HC seeks Delhi government response on private school plea of using their buses

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday (30 December 2015) asked the Delhi government to file reply on a plea seeking stay of the notification directing the city’s public schools to provide their buses for running as public transport from January 1 to 15 when the number of private vehicles on the capital’s roads will drastically fall. Directions for Pollution Control and Improving Ambient Air Quality in Delhi NCR issued by Centre

The Central Government today (30 December) issued directions, to all agencies, under Section 18 of Air Act, 1981, to control air pollution and improve the Ambient Air Quality in Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR). The directions have been issued to state governments of Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

National Law School and Trilegal International Arbitration Moot (NLSTIAM), 2016.

National Law School of India University in association with Trilegal is organizing the 9th National Law School and Trilegal International Arbitration Moot which is to be held between 20th to 22nd May, 2016.

The NLSTIAM was first held in the year 2008 and since then it is attempting to raise the bar of the Moot Court Competitions in India. This year, the NLSTIAM is attracting entries from all around the world.

The moot problem is expected to be based on Communications Law.

Supreme Court upholds liquor policy of Kerala Government

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (29 December 2015) upheld the Kerala government’s liquor policy restricting service and consumption of liquor at bars in five star hotels only, saying the policy of curbing public consumption of alcohol did not suffer from any arbitrariness. “We find no illegality or irrationality with the intention of the state to clamp down on public consumption of alcohol. So the policy does not suffer from the vice of arbitrariness,” said a bench of Justice Vikramajit Sen and Justice Shiva Kirti Singh in their judgement. The full judgment of the court can be seen online here.
