Delhi’s lawyers on Wednesday (16 December) wrote to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal requesting him to exempt advocates from the city government’s odd-even vehicle restriction plan.

SC asks Government to prepare procedure for judges appointment in consultation with collegium

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (16 December) directed the central government to prepare a memorandum of procedure that will be followed by the supreme court collegium in the appointment of judges to the higher judiciary. Pronouncing the order, the apex court constitution bench comprising of Justices Jagdish Singh Khehar,  J. Chelameswar, Madan B. Lokur, Kurian Joseph and Adarsh Kumar Goel, said that the government will prepare the memorandum of procedure in consultation with the Chief Justice of India who in turn will undertake the exercise with the unanimous opinion of the five-member collegium.

Registration of diesel SUVs, luxury cars banned in Delhi by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Wednesday (16 December) imposed a blanket ban on the registration of diesel vehicles, SUVs and luxury cars of engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above in the entire National Capital Region. This ban will continue till 31 March 2016. The court also increased by 100 percent the environment compensation charge (ECC) for the commercial vehicles entering Delhi.

Not easy to implement odd and even numbered vehicles rule in Delhi

Recently, Delhi Government led by Arvind Kejriwal has taken a decision to allow running of odd and even numbered private vehicles in Delhi on alternate days. This means that 50% of the private vehicles will not be running on any given day. This decision is likely to be implemented on experimental basis for 15 days starting 1 January, 2016. However, it may not be easy to implement this decision due to various problems, howsoever noble the intention behind this decision may be.

SC may double green charge on commercial vehicles entering Delhi as transit

The Supreme Court on Tuesday (15 December) indicated that it may double the Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) on commercial vehicles using the national capital as transit for their onward journey to other destinations to curb the capital’s alarming pollution levels. A bench of Chief Justice T.S. Thakur, Justice A.K.Sikri and Justice R. Banumathi said that it would double the ECC at the conclusion of nearly three-hour-long hearing on the steps that can be taken to reduce the air pollution in Delhi which has assumed alarming proportions.

The Supreme Court is likely to pronounce on Wednesday (16 December) its order on improving the functioning of the collegium and bringing transparency in the appointment of judges to the higher judiciary including the apex court. The constitution bench comprising Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice J. Chelameswar, Justice Madan B. Lokur, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel had reserved their order on November 19 after hearing suggestions from cross section of stakeholders including the government. The pronouncement of this order is likely to take place at 10.30 am in Court No. 3 in the Supreme Court.
