The Delhi High Court on Tuesday (22 September) dismissed the anticipatory bail petition of former Delhi law minister and AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, accused of domestic violence by his wife Lipika Mitra.
“The plea has been dismissed,” Justice Suresh Kait said while dismissing Bharti’s plea.
The High Court had on September 15 granted Bharti, an Aam Aadmi Party legislator from Malviya Nagar, protection against arrest till September 17 and sought a police report on the status of investigation in the case.
Bharti had sought cancellation of warrant issued against him by a trial court.
Bharti was named in a first information report (FIR) filed under different provisions of the Indian Penal Code, including charges of domestic violence and attempt to murder, at Dwarka North police station in west Delhi.
Police said they filed the FIR following the June 10 complaint by Bharti’s wife, who said the AAP leader had been abusing her ever since their marriage in 2010. She also claimed that Bharti beat and tortured her and once even tried to kill her.
