A Muslim youth has divorced his wife within 4 weeks of marriage by simply sending a WhatsApp message to her of tripe talaq – “talaq, talaq, talaq”. This is perhaps the first time (at least in India) that a Muslim youth has tried to use the Muslim law provision of merely saying triple talaq to his wife over WhatsApp to divorce her. Times of India has reported that the NRI husband of the 21-year-old BDS student left for Dubai merely after 10 days of the marriage and thereafter after about 3 weeks, he sent her the message of triple talaq over WhatsApp.
This unfortunate incident has led the wife dropping out of her BDS classes and she has returned from her in-laws’ house to her parents’ house. Subsequently, she filed a complaint at the state women’s commission in Pala, Kottayam on 5 October 2015, and the latter has ordered the Department of Non-resident Keralites’ affairs to find her husband, who is a 27-year-old NRI youth from Vaikom in Kottayam district.
Ironically, the father of the girl had died about 4 years back and her marriage expenses were incurred by her mother, including for dowry.
It is really unfortunate that nobody takes any interest in bringing about changes in the unequal law relating to triple talaq which leads to injustice to Muslim women. Neither the Parliament nor the Muslim community have shown interest in changing the law.
