Delhi High Court is likely to get a new building to meet the demands of additional infrastructure facilities and increased sanctioned strength of judges in the high court. Asian Age newspaper has reported that in order to meet its increased work load, Delhi high court has moved a proposal to set up a new building on 2.74-acre land at Bapa Nagar in central Delhi. It is reported that the PWD has estimated the total amount for the project at ₹ 166.34 crore.
The Delhi Government is reported to be in talks with the Central Government for funding of proposals for construction of new high court buildings with additional Central assistance. After a series of communications, the planning department of the State Government has finally agreed in-principle to get 30 per cent from the Centre for the said project. This means that the Delhi Government may have to provide for more than ₹ 100 crore for the new project.
It is pertinent to mention that Bapa Nagar in Delhi is situated near the Shershah Road (near India Gate), which is the road on which the Delhi High Court is presently located. Therefore, the new building for the high court will be close to the existing high court infrastructure, as and when the new building is constructed. Here is a Google Map of the Bapa Nagar area of Delhi, where the new high court building has been proposed for construction:
Of course, one does not know how much time it will take to complete the construction after the funding for the new project is finalised.
It may be pointed out that at present (as on 1 July 2015), the sanctioned strength of Delhi High Court is 60 judges (45 permanent + 15 additional judges), out of which 19 positions are vacant.
