A large number of advocates in Bihar today (15 July 2015) abstained from work and went on strike. They are agitating for their demand to allow unrestricted entry of vigilance officials into the premises of subordinate courts. The lawyers allege that there is lack of initiative by the Patna High Court on this issue, as reported by IANS news agency. It is a rare situation that the lawyers have gone on strike to curb the menace of corruption in the judicial system.
In fact, the call for the strike was given by the Bihar State Bar Council (BSBC) and it had appealed to all advocates from district and sub-divisional courts, tribunals and from the Patna High Court to abstain from court work on Wednesday, July 15, 2015. This is what was stated by Akhouri Mangla Charan Srivastava, chairman of BSBC, who also said that their strike was very successful since the agitation had hit the working of most courts in Bihar including the Patna High Court.
It is noteworthy that recently Tilak Marg had reported about Contempt Notices issued by MP HC to large number of advocates who went on strike. One has to see whether a similar situation is repeated in Bihar.
