Former Chief Justice of India Madan Mohan Punchhi dies at 81

Hindustan Times has reported that the former Chief Justice of India Shri Madan Mohan Punchhi died on 17 June 2015 due to a cardiac arrest in the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He breathed his last at 8:25 pm on Wednesday evening (17 June) at the hospital.

Justice M.M. Punchhi was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 06.10.1989. He was appointed the Chief Justice of India on 18.01.1998 and retired on 09.10.1998. He was the 28th Chief Justice of India. As chief justice of India, he was preceded by Justice J.S. Verma, and succeeded by Dr. Justice A.S. Anand.

Justice Punchhi was born on 10 October, 1933 at Pakpattan in Punjab (now in Pakistan). Having begun his legal career in 1955, he was appointed as a Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court in December-1982.
