FIR by CBI against CBI Sub-Inspector for accepting ₹ 5 lakh bribe for help in settling case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR on 1 December 2016 against its own officer, Shri Sanjeev Kumar Singh, a Sub-Inspector of Police in CBI, ACB, New Delhi under Sections 7, 8, 11 & 13(1)(d) r/w 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, for having demanded and accepted a bribe of Rs. 5 lakh from a private person for helping him to settle a case being investigated into by the CBI. The said private person, Shri Sunil Kumar, who is a Director in M/s Darsh Construction Pvt. Ltd., Delhi, has also been named as an accused person in the above case.

It has been alleged in the said FIR that CBI, ACB, New Delhi had registered a regular case on 10 May 2016 against the said Shri Sunil Kumar and others for causing wrongful loss to Punjab National Bank. Shri Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Sub-Inspector, was the member of the CBI team which had conducted searches at the premises belonging to the said Shri Sunil Kumar. It is further alleged that on 17 September 2016, Sunil Kumar contacted Sanjeev Kumar Singh and both had a meeting in the Safdarjang Development Area, Delhi in connection with the case being investigated against him. They had several meetings after that and Sanjeev is alleged to have assured Sunil that he would help him to settle his cases pending under investigation through his contacts in CBI and would ensure that he is not arrested or subjected to harassment. For this purpose, Sunil is alleged to have agreed to pay Rs. 10 lakh as illegal gratification. In pursuance of the said criminal conspiracy, it is alleged that Sunil had delivered Rs. 5 lakh as bribe to Sanjeev Kumar Singh in the form of cash and also paying for various renovation works in the flat of Sanjeev Kumar Singh. It is further alleged in the FIR that Sanjeev had been demanding the remaining bribe and completion of renovation work of his flat from Sunil Kumar. Sanjeev was also alleged to have gone to the house of Sunil to pressurise him in this regard.

The said FIR has been registered by Shri P. Kannan, Superintendent of Police, CBI, AC-I, New Delhi and the investigation of this case has been given to Shri Vijay Bahadur, Inspector of Police in CBI, AC-I, New Delhi.
