CBI asked by Delhi court to reply to allegations of Jagdish Tytler bribing a prime witness in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Delhi S.P.S. Laler today (3 June 2015) directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to file reply on the allegations that the Congress leader Jagdish Tytler, who is an accused in the 1984 anti Sikh riots, had tried to influence a witness in case in which CBI filed a closure report. CBI’s reply was sought on the statement of jailed businessman Abhishek Verma during its further investigation in the riots case recorded by it.

The court heard arguments on the closure report filed by the CBI in the case against Jagdish Tytler. Senior advocate Shri H.S. Phoolka, who is appearing on behalf of the riots victims, informed thatAbhishek Verma had told the CBI that Tytler had paid a hefty amount to Surinder Kumar Granthi, one of the main witnesses in the case who had deposed against Tytler about his involvement in the case. Moreover, Surinder’s son Narinder Singh was also settled abroad with the help of Tytler. Phoolka said that Tytler had told Verma that he had mounted pressure on Narinder who in turn was to pressurize his father Surinder to change his statement in favour of Jagdish Tytler. This is what Verma had allegedly told CBI.

It is pertinent to point out that in April 2013, CBI was directed by a sessions court to further investigate the case as it set aside its earlier closure report. The case will now be heard on 26 June 2015 on the closure report filed by the CBI after getting CBI’s response on the above issue.
